How do we create sustainable food?

Author: Alexandra O’Sullivan FreltoftTænketankenFrej Project Managerdebate: The supermarket will choose which items are on the shelves and what kind of food you put in the basket. All choices involve opt-out, and in terms of food, there is always a dilemma of sustainable development.

Should animal welfare or climate be emphasized in the food placed in the refrigerator? In the spirit of sustainable development, Rema 1000 chose to be open and provide advice on the sustainable development problems of young people. Therefore, they have become Frej’s partners in sustainable action.

In recent years, all companies have been moving towards a more sustainable way of doing business. Here, the food sector is particularly important because it accounts for a quarter of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions and covers an area larger than all forests in the world.

Sustainability actions are required in food, which leads to dilemmas. To eliminate food waste, should we focus on selling crooked cucumbers and unequal tomatoes, or should we better focus on ecology, local products or fair working conditions throughout the value chain?

How will consumers respond to the new measures?

Rema 1000 has taken a bold step and opened up some dilemmas as a new partner in the sustainable action of the Frege think tank. Frej’s mission is to create a sustainable Danish food by promoting difficult dialogue between companies and sustainability that is passed on from generation to generation.

Although Rema 1000 has been committed to sustainable development for many years, there are still many problems to consider and make choices to make the company continue to develop in a more sustainable direction.

Only by making publicly resolved decisions can we all become wiser. Therefore, part of the collaboration between Frej and Rema 1000 was that Rema 1000 shared some of the problems they faced with 70 volunteers from Frej. In turn, Frege’s young volunteers shared their views and opinions and discussed how Rema 1000 can be further developed on the sustainable development agenda.

The better we use each other, the nuances of different choices can be discovered, and the better decisions we can make.

“In turn, the young volunteers of Frege also shared their views and input on how Rema 1000 is further developed on the sustainable development agenda”

We believe that partnership can make all parties smarter, and hope that the cooperation between Rema 1000 and Frej can inspire others to unite and share their difficulties.

All companies may need an ambitious green sustainability team. However, not everyone dares to openly solve their own sustainable development problems.
